What Would I Do to Learn Even More?

In order to learn more about my justice issue, the main thing that I would want to do would be to keep up with all of the current news regarding educational injustice. I would set up alerts and read news articles related to this issue, as well as do additional research to see both the historical precedent and understand the arguments on both sides.

One excellent video that I found very educational was the Ted Talk on public schooling by Kandice Sumner. She talks about the disparity that is created in educational experiences through opportunities, which I thought was very relevant to my project and informative.

If I wanted to interview someone, I would want to interview the mayor of my town and other towns to see what their particular stance on the education system is. My own personal belief is that this issue is one that gets perpetuated on a local level and needs to be addressed on that same level. For that reason, I would interview the mayor of San Leandro, or Oakland, or any other neighborhood and see what their own takes on the matter is. One of the main things that I noticed in my research is that this issue is not the byproduct of a single person, but rather years and years of discrimination, and therefore, thorough understanding of the modern-day situation is of the utmost importance.

I would want to travel and volunteer at other schools and other low-income areas to see how this injustice manifests itself in a variety of areas and how various people are trying to overcome it. What action are other places taking to either bridge this gap or further it? How effective are their actions? I would want to learn all of this, and therefore travel to other places like Hoover Elementary.
