The Silent Voice of Children

Anawim Project 2018

ABOUT

My name is Aniket Dhar, a junior at Bishop O'Dowd High School. I  am currently 15 years old, and am primarily interested in science and engineering, which I was able to apply on my project. I participated in a school-led project over the summer, of which the goal was to help other schools develop their own gardening programs. While the goal of the project was to develop a garden and teach sustainable lifestyles to children at these schools it was also a good insight into the economic injustice that plagues many poorer members of society.

ABOUT

Hoover Elementary:

A Summary

The Lives of Kids on the Edge of Soceity

Hoover Elementary School is a public school located in Oakland. Despite being a large school with many student, the school lacked many resources and amenities that other school have. One such resource was greenspace. The project that I was a part of was designed to help schools such as Hoover develop these gardens and work with teachers to create lesson plans to teach sustainable living styles.

Hoover was founded in 1980 in a poorer district in Oakland As a result, they did not receive much funding for anything other than the essentials, lacking many other resources. In recent years, Hoover is attempting to develop these resources on their own and rely upon free and donated resources primarily to make these programs work.

I chose economic injustice to focus upon because I was able to see during my time there how many opportunities and how much I had as a child that I never even realized. I was able to see how much more fortunate I have been in my life, and I wanted to let as many people as I could see the struggle of these children and make some change so that they are also able to learn like I was able to.
